International Garden Photographer of the Year 2009

 

The winners of the second International Garden Photographer of the Year competition have been announced. Their exceptional entries, were chosen by a panel of thirteen judges from thousands of entries received from around the world.

International Garden Photographer of the Year, 2009

The overall winner of the £5,000 prize for the best single image is UK-based photographer, Jonathan BERMAN for In Tresco Abbey Gardens.  This dreamlike infrared photograph of Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Scilly Isles was selected from the Garden Views category. 

 

Best Portfolio – sponsored by Calumet

The Best Portfolio Prize is awarded to Sebastian KAPS, from Germany, for Georgengarten: a collection of six breathtaking images illustrating the landscape garden at Dessau, Germany, following a heavy snowfall.

 

Young Garden Photographer of the Year - sponsored by Epson

The Young Garden Photographer of the Year title goes to 15-year-old Kat WATERS for the best single image from an under 16 year old. Purple Haze is an explosive close up of an echinops flower bursting into bloom.

Trees  Photograph – Dennis Frates for Lone Fall Tree.

The Edible Garden  Photograph – Bapi Chakraborty for Super Tomatoes.

World Botanic Gardens  Photograph – Matthew Bishop for The Futuristic Alpine House.

Special Awards

The second International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition will be on display at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, from 23 May to the end of September 2009. www.kew.org  

The International Garden Photographer of the Year Collection 02 book, illustrating all the winners, finalists and commended images from the second competition will be available from 23 May 2009 in the Kew Gardens shop, in all major book stores and also online at http://www.igpoty.com

The third IGPOTY competition is now open. The closing date for submissions is 30 November 2009. Entries should be made online at www.igpoty.com
